Port Nolloth

And then you might ask, “Where the hell is that?’ That’s ok, not many people are visiting the coastal town of Port Nolloth or McDougals Bay. Let me give you a bit more information on these two places.

Background:

Port Nolloth is a small harbour town in the Namaqualand region of the Northern Cape Province of South Africa. The port was originally use to transport copper and diamonds from the mines to Cape Town. During the 1970’s the major seagoing activities scaled down to fishing and small-vessel tourism. Today its a small commercial town with a few diamond boats pumping diamonds from the seabed. There are also a few great holiday homes and guest houses at the adjacent McDoudals Bay. Its not really a swimming ocean, but excellent for walks on the beach, and watching the fishing boats laying behind the break.

Accommodation:

We stayed one night in the awesome guesthouse called “Dis Al Akkommodasie“. This chalet sleeps four people, and is equipped with everything that you will ever need on a holiday. They even made provision for food bowls for a small dog or cat. It is situated very close to the beach, and you have a sea view from your stoep.

You can always go for a walk on the beach. There is a long stretch of beautiful sandy beach with dogs playing and seagulls grabbing lunch. Although the water is a bit cold, its still nice to wiggle your feet in a puddle of sea water.

If you ever thing of traveling in that direction, be aware that most of the roads are gravel roads, and that it is not maintained very well. As everyone knows that a rental car is the best 4×4, it is not recommended that you go on the gravel roads with a sedan. Use a LDV or 4×4 vehicle for your own safety and sanity.

You will never regret your journey to Port Nolloth or McDougals Bay. It’s just one of those places that you fall in love with, when you visit for the first time.
