As a consequence of its link to Goethe’s concept of world literature, formulated in the nineteenth century and employed since that time in comparative studies, the littérature-monde of the forty-four signatories brings with it a cultural heritage that both runs the risk of preventing the freedom it seeks from Francophonie and simultaneously offers Francophone studies the potential benefits of new developments in comparative studies which are no longer bound by outdated notions of the region. While the concept of littérature-monde has managed to open up a debate in France on its own relationship with Francophonie, it has also remained useful to Anglo-American Francophone studies, who themselves need to rethink their approach to regionality, given that the concept of the region can be as problematic, and leave as powerful a colonial aftertaste, as that of the nation if it remains defined by obsolete borders.
